The making of : Guaravita

Então, sempre que eu faço uma música, eu gosto de colocar todos esses pequenos ovos de Páscoa secretos na música que só eu conheço. Mas eu pensei que já era hora de compartilhar todos os meus segredos.
Com este post eu quero começar a contar as histórias por trás das minhas músicas, os samples que uso e porque fiz essa música específica.
Eu vou começar com a minha música Guaravita. A produção da música é bem simples, mas duas músicas brasileiras foram sampleados.
O baixo na música vem da banda Secos e Molhados, uma banda que foi muito popular nos anos 70, quando a ditadura militar estava dominando, e essa banda incrível não fez apenas músicas absurdamente bonitas, mas também se posicionou contra a ditadura. Eu escolhi a música Vôo deles porque eu sempre achei que ela era incrivelmente edificante e energética. Em vez de usar toda a linha de baixo, cortei-a e fiz minha própria linha de baixo bem simples.
Com isso eu precisava de uma deliciosa batida clássica de funk e há uma música funk que eu adoro muuuito chamada Sarra Novinha no Grau. Então peguei apenas a batida básica daquela música e a trouxe com o baixo do Vôo.
Depois eu fiz uma melodia simples e leve no meu teclado com malhos como instrumento. Quando eu fiz essa batida imediatamente pensei que era especial, e com as batidas especiais eu sempre me pergunto muito sobre o que fazer com as letras. Com essa batida, decidi deixá-lo até que uma ideia surgiu. Cerca de um mês depois, meu amigo Martin Bech me ligou bem tarde. Ele é um fotógrafo muito talentoso e tem o melhor equipamento para vídeos, então eu sei que quando ele chamar, vai ser uma boa notícia. A conversa foi assim:
Martin: Fefe, o que você vai fazer amanhã?
Eu: Nada, no que esta pensando? *
* Eu tinha muitos planos, mas por suas habilidades eu vou cancelar todos eles
Martin: Eu estou filmando uma cena de cinema amanhã em um castelo incrível e eu vou ter duas horas sem nada para fazer e eu lembrei em você, então você gostaria de fazer um vídeo clipe amanhã? E aí você tem uma música pronta?
Eu: Sim, totalmente, vamos fazer isso, e sim, eu tenho uma música, é claro! *
* Eu não tinha músicas prontas, mas esse cara é tão bom que eu teria que fazer uma muito rapidamente
Martin: OK, me encontre às 5 da manhã, e vamos lá!
Agora eu tive uma oportunidade incrível de gravar um clipe bacano, eu simplesmente não tinha uma música. Eu passei por minhas batidas e quando ouvi essa batida eu fiquei tipo, sim, é essa!
Para encontrar a melodia e o flow eu sempre faço várias gravaçoes nas batidas que eu faço. Quando eu faço freestyle em portugues vira bem simples, sendo que meu portugues não me deixa rimar muito bem ainda kkkk. Mais eu fiz o meu freestyle com este, e de alguma forma as palavras que eu disse todos tinham que ver com lanches, mais especificamente lanche brasileiro.
Acabei amando, especialmente quando ouvi as gravações tocadas umas sobre as outras. Neste momento já era muito tarde e eu tive que acordar às 3 da manhã. Eu teria que fazer o resto da musica no caminho até o castelo.
A viagem durou cerca de três horas e foi o suficiente para eu terminar a música e, na verdade, a versão que fiz no carro é a versão que acabei lançando. Outro fato interessante é que Guaravita é minha bebida preferida número um e você só pode comprá-la aqui no Rio!
No meio da música você vai me ouvir cantar: Sempre com fome. Isso tem sido meu lema por anos por que eu nunca deixarei de estar com fome por desafios e experiências e a vida em geral.
Então, minha música simples sobre lanches tem traços de duas das minhas músicas favoritas, e isso faz com que a música signifique muito mais para mim.

So whenever I make a song I like to put all these little secret Easter eggs into the song that only I know about. But I thought it was about time I started sharing all my secrets.
With this blog post I wanna start telling the stories behind my songs, the samples I use and why I made this specific song.
I am gonna start with my song Guaravita. The production of the song is quite simple but two brazilian songs were sampled in the making.
The bass in the song actually comes from the band Secos e Molhados, a band that was very popular in the 70s when the military dictatorship was ruling, and this amazing band didn't just make incredibly beautiful music but they also stood up against the dictatorship.
I chose to sample the song Vôo by them because I always found it to be incredibly uplifting and energetic. Instead of sampling the entire bass line I cut it up and made my own very simple bass line.
With this I needed a delicious classic funk beat and there's a funk song that I loooove called Sarra Novinha no Grau. Só I took just the basic beat from that song and brought it in with the bass from Vôo.
For the melody I made a simple and light one on my keyboard with mallets as the instrument.
When I made this beat I immediately thought it was special, and with the special beats I always wonder quite a lot on what to do with the lyrics. With this beat I decided to let it be until an idea came up.
About a month later my friend Martin Bech called me late at night. He is a very talented photographer and has the best equipment for videos so I know that when he calls its gonna be good news. The conversation went like this:
Martin : Fefe, what are you doing tomorrow?
Me: Nothing, what's up? *
*I had many plans but for his skills I will cancel them all
Martin: I am shooting a movie scene tomorrow at an incredible castle and I will have two hours with nothing to do and I thought of you, so would you want to do a music video tomorrow? And do you have a song?
Me: Yes totally, let's do it, and yes I have a song of course! *
*I had no song ready but this guy is so good I would just have to make one
Martin: OK, meet me at 5 in the morning.
Okay so I now had an amazing opportunity to shoot a sick video, I just didn't have a song. I went through my beats and when I heard this beat I was like, yes!
To find the melody and flow I use I always just do various takes over the beats that I make. I did the same with this one, and somehow the words I said all got snack related, more specifically brazilian snack related.
I ended up loving it, especially when I heard the recordings played over each other. At this point it was very late and I had to get up at 3 in the morning. I would have to do the rest on the way to the castle.
The drive was around three hours long and just enough for me to finish the song and actually the version I did on the drive over there is the version that I ended up putting out. Another fun fact is that Guaravita is my favorite drink number one and you can only buy it in Rio!
In the middle of the song you will hear me sing : Sempre com fome. That means forever hungry in portuguêse and it has been my motto for years since I will never stop being hungry for challenges and experiences and life in general.
So my simple song about snacks actually has to traces from two of my favorite songs, and that makes the song mean so much more to be.
